Large scale pastel drawing by Michael Bastow (Born 1943, UK) measuring approximately 70 × 150 cm., circa 1992. 

This powerful composition combines one of the artist’s signature reclining female nudes with a rare inserted self-portrait of the artist, creating an intimate and psychologically layered scene characteristic of Bastow’s mature figurative work.

Rendered in richly modulated pastel tones, the work demonstrates Bastow’s distinctive handling of colour, contour, and atmosphere. Several large diagonal tears traverse the image area. These correspond with Bastow’s documented studio practice of cutting and tearing pastel sheets as part of a process of deconstruction and recomposition, described by the artist in material published by Galerie De Zwarte Panter.
